Camping in the Golden Isles FAQs
What’s the difference between RV camping, tent camping, and cabin camping in the Golden Isles?
RV camping is best for travelers who want hookups, air conditioning, storage, and easier setups. Tent camping is more rustic and hands-on, with wooded or park-style settings at places like Jekyll Island Campground and Blythe Island Regional Park Campground. Cabin camping is limited, but Southern Retreat RV Park offers cabin rentals.
Do Golden Isles campgrounds offer hookups for RVs?
Yes. Jekyll Island Campground offers full-hookup RV sites, Blythe Island Regional Park Campground offers RV sites with water, electric and sewer, and Coastal GA RV Resort and Southern Retreat RV Park offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service. Confirm site length before booking.
Can I reserve campsites in advance or are walk-ins allowed?
Reservations are recommended, especially during spring, summer, holidays, and weekends. Jekyll Island Campground recommends reservations, and Blythe Island Regional Park Campground requires a credit card to reserve a site.
Are Golden Isles campgrounds pet-friendly?
Yes, several are pet-friendly. Jekyll Island Campground allows pets, Blythe Island Regional Park Campground allows leashed pets with restrictions, Southern Retreat RV Park lists a dog park and dog spa, and Coastal GA RV Resort lists a bark park. Confirm current fees, leash rules and restricted areas before arrival.
What amenities should I expect at campgrounds in the Golden Isles?
Amenities vary by campground. Jekyll Island Campground offers Wi-Fi, bathhouses, laundry, a store and bike rentals. Blythe Island Regional Park Campground offers bathhouses, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, Lake Cindee, fishing areas, trails, and a boat ramp. Coastal GA RV Resort offers paved roads, bathhouses, laundromats, bark park, gameroom, and a dock and store.
Is camping in the Golden Isles family-friendly?
Yes. Family camping in Georgia works well here because campgrounds can pair overnight stays with beaches, biking, fishing, kayaking, picnic areas, playgrounds, and nature. Blythe Island Regional Park is especially useful for families who want lake access and park amenities.
Do I need a permit to camp in the Golden Isles?
No. You do not need a separate camping permit when you reserve a designated campsite at a Golden Isles campground. You do need a valid campsite reservation and must follow campground rules.
Jekyll Island visitors should note that a vehicle parking/entry permit is required to enter the island, but that is separate from camping. Beach camping is not allowed in most areas, so campers should stay only in approved campgrounds.
Can I bring a golf cart or bike to campgrounds in the Golden Isles?
Yes. You can bring bikes to Golden Isles campgrounds, and they are especially useful on Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, and Brunswick.
You can also bring golf carts to some campgrounds, including Jekyll Island Campground and Blythe Island Regional Park Campground. Golf carts must follow local rules, such as street-legal requirements, licensed drivers, registration where required, and restrictions on bike paths or roads with higher speed limits.
Golden Isles Camping Tips
Before booking, confirm RV hookups, pet rules, quiet hours, check-in and check-out times, cancellation policies and weather plans. Pack for heat, humidity, insects and rain with sunscreen, repellent, extra water, rain gear, flashlights, chargers, towels, a cooler, and a portable fan. Families should bring snacks, shade, first aid supplies, extra clothes, and simple outdoor games.
